Truly this is the most meaningful conversation I’ve heard on this podcast in a very long time. Her assessment of the various movements and political realities on the ground are very interesting. Please have her come back after the election.
If only it were possible to stop the inevitable course of nationalism fired with a self-righteousness and arrogance the equal of anything experienced in Germany or Japan before their destruction brought those countries back to earth and equality with the rest of mankind. I read Haaretz daily and I know from the viewpoints of several who write for the paper and the many who comment with intelligence and insight that there are good people in Israel, a struggling band with no hope of prevailing over the insanity that has gripped most Israelis. I would love to see them come to the US as they would be quite at home here with a future that will not come to them in Israel.
The crazed settlers in the West Bank are only the current example of what Zionism was about in 1948 as it conducted the Nakba. From the 1970's they have intimidated the government into allowing them to continue settling, it being, after all, the design of Zionism from the start. Now Israel is a monster striking out in all directions, nursed into this horrible form by the US giving the false impression of unstoppable power. Only social media has been able to break through the mighty edifice of hasbara with the truth about Israel, there to be seen by those of us who investigated over the decades and knew of the ongoing hell in the West Bank and Gaza, but now on everyone's cellphone daily that even Ellison's ownership of CBS cannot suppress.
Here in the US I demonstrate against Zionism and for liberty and justice for all. The two are antithetical. I fly an upside down American flag as I appeal to my fellow Americans to break the grip of Zionism on America that has brought the country to the low of declaring a war on Iran, no threat to the US, for Israel from which Trump cannot escape without the humiliation that he deserves. How many Iranians and even Americans must die adding to the grand total killed by/for Israel in the middle east because of what the irrational Trump may do?
I am using my right to freedom of speech, yet my friends and relatives are frightened for me and do not dare to stand with me. Standing for the foundation of the US in the US addressing Americans and they are afraid for me? Such is the power of Zionism in America that there is this intimidation. Indeed, I have been assaulted by a man calling me a "Jew-hating bastard". I also face profanity routinely, curses, wishes that I go to hell, the F word every time I am on the corner, daily. There is far more positive response to me than negative, but my point is - who are these Americans expressing scarcely contained rage at me for being an American in opposition to a foreign country? I hear "long live Israel" and Hatikva gets played from time to time. It is not wrong to fear these people, but I stand alone because my country demands it of me yet my countrymen will not stand as well. This is shameful and unpatriotic in the name of ethnic supremacy!
I stand in front of a meeting place for my fellow Americans who are Jewish, a synagogue. I have asked the rabbi to come out with her congregation and stand with me for liberty and justice for all. No reply in 20 months of trying to bring them out for the country they live in, that guarantees all that anyone can ask for, equality with fellow citizens. On the building is BLACK LIVES MATTER. There will never be a sign for Palestinian lives. Hypocrisy.
Where are the synagogues across America that proclaim they stand with liberty and justice for all and against Zionism? Of the roughly 2000 congregations I know of one that does this. Zionist American billionaires openly proclaim standing with Israel and spend lavishly to support it through AIPAC and associated PAC's. How is this loyalty to the liberty and justice for all that has made it possible for them to become fabulously wealthy.
And yet Americans are told that one cannot ask about dual loyalty! Americans are told by such as Jonathan Greenblatt that antisemitism in American is a problem when he says not a word about unconditional US support of genocide, going on for years now. Antisemite is the verbal spear of Zionists intended to intimidate Americans into silence on Israel. How in the world did the world's only superpower get strapped down to the ground by a tiny country on the other side of the world to do its bidding? Americans should be in the streets as I am shouting for an end to the "special relationship" that has made the US the hypocrite of the world.
The end of the relationship is in progress now with no reversal possible. Even the right (Tucker, Megyn, MTG) is questioning if not rejecting it outright. This is so long overdue, 78 years of hell for the natives of Palestine continuing as I write with insanity at the top in Israel on full display as Naftali Bennett talks of Israel taking on Turkey! This is megalomaniacal. Netanyahu is not the problem. Whoever replaces him will be right in line with the fanaticism that the Israeli people show they approve of in polls by 80% (of Jewish Israelis). Gaza genocide - good. War with Iran, let it continue.
Israel is a nightmare for all but Israelis as they double down with their supporters in the US (often dual citizens, the ultimate hypocrisy) showing the furious hatred to me on the street. Every effort needs to be made worldwide to cut Israel off from all support, military, financial and diplomatic.
Well-meaning people, among which are you at J-Street, need to use all your influence to get Israelis to leave there and come here, where only equality not supremacy is offered before deprivation kicks in with the ending of all US support in just a few years. I have found on the street that there is no rational way to address Zionists. They have no argument to present when I ask them if they support liberty and justice for all. In fact, the other day I had an American Zionist who would not say the five words. I have yet to have one do so.
My latest sign says "Humanity or Israel - You Choose - Break the Grip"
Early Jewish opponents of Zionism were right in their prophecy, it has done terrible damage in claiming for itself Israel as "The Jewish State", hijacking a religion that is about the value of human life. The Jews of JVP are the best Americans, courageous in standing above family and tribe for humanity and I stand with them. May the nightmare of Israel come to an end in a land open to all who want to live there. I fear what Zionist fanaticism will countenance in doing all it can to prevent the inevitable.
Jews are human beings like everyone else. They act accordingly, from the saintly to the malevolent. Israel proves this with Jews, on their own and for themselves following the path of the European countries into the malevolence that comes so naturally with nationalism.
