The Israeli government should absolutely be investigating this, but thinking that is enough to stop it without holding Hamas and their collaborators to account following the commissioners report on sexual violence on October 7th, then you’re in cloud cuckoo land. Any Palestinians imprisoned in relation to that horrific massacre were already set up to be on the receiving end of Israeli prison guards’ wrath. It’s not “right” but it’s to be expected. And as long as the world keeps pointing fingers only at Israel while turning a blind eye to Hamas’s crimes, both against Israelis and against their own people, then that wrath will not be curbed by discipline alone.
The west is too scared to do what it has to do. Israel is the easy one to target. Israel has reasons to try to maintain relations with the rest of the world. And also, no one wants to be seen to side with the Jews, even though it will be the quickest way to free the Palestinian people from their own oppressive leaders, and create the space to build a national home in coexistence with the Jewish nation.

I think that there’s not enough evidence with many of these allegations to open an investigation. The issue is that if someone just makes an allegation and doesn’t provide any evidence, there’s no way it can meet the evidentiary bar here.
Serious abuses should be meticulously well documented and reported and investigated. If someone guy says my name is such and such and a dog attacked me at this prison, there were these other prisoners around and they can corroborate, then perhaps that’s enough for an investigation. I suppose a dog attack is plausible even if not terribly likely (set aside the much less credible rape for a second).
The issue with these unsubstantiated allegation is there’s just not enough evidence for an investigation. You can’t investigate based on he said she said. We have innocent until proven guilty. The New York Times could be doing its own investigation into Israeli prisons, rather than repeating unsubstantiated allegations in an op-ed column. And yes Israel should investigate things if there’s enough evidence brought. The issue is that an unsubstantiated allegation from a Palestinian NGO isn’t enough for anyone credible to open an investigation.

Yesterday I was finally able to sit down and spend time time reading Kristof and following the links and trying to come to grips with this. The timing you Mention about its release also- may be an important issue. But I disagree with you, That the sexual abuse in various cases are unrelated. I am definitely not an expert on the Epstein files, but I think a key word in your reply above is "supposedly". I haven't really seen credible links to Israeli or US intelligence... I don't know...maybe it is real...I certainly hope not! But Judy, that is a rather extraordinary and potentially inflammatory claim. I am a scientist and I do know that (at least in science) extraordinary claims require extraordinary levels of evidence. And for good reason. Many claims that seem true in science in the moment at some point later have a tendency to unravel (or at the very least become much more complex/complicated/nuanced than initially presented). I would have a fair amount of skepticism about the claims linking Israeli/US intelligence to the Epstein situation... Maybe there is something there, but at least on the surface, they seem a little conspiratorial to me.

This has been going on, at smaller scale, for decades now. And too many people have been content to ignore it and talk about it only being a few bad apples. But a few bad apples "spoils the bunch"! By encouraging an attitude and culture of Israeli impunity (anything is permitted if it's construed as being for the defense of Israel), we've enabled the inevitable panoply of abuses that this article skims.

I thought JStreet’s goal was a two state solution. I’m not sure how opening an investigation into potential dog rapes based on unsubstantiated claims in an NYT op-Ed would help. I don’t think an unsubstantiated claim is enough to open an investigation. Who did this? Where was the dog incident? What did the soldier look like? Who else was there to be a witness? We don’t have enough evidence to open any kind of investigation.

By encouraging an attitude and culture of Israeli impunity (anything is permitted if it's construed as being for the defense of Israel), we've enabled the inevitable panoply of abuses that this article skims.
Something is rotten in Israeli society and the rot has to be washed away. Or this type of article will become routine and the only thing about Israel that people know.

That’s a good part of US foreign and domestic policy today and still the reaction to these kind of reports by many, many ppl in the US.
Let’s understand: WE, (our government), are funding these war crimes. We are complicit!

BTW remember those SUPPRESSED student demonstrations about the ongoing war in Gaza? Maybe they had a point; maybe universities should’ve resisted being shaken down, maybe they should not have bent a knee to the ridiculous notion that criticism of Israel was disguised antisemitism.
I thought JStreet’s goal was a two state solution. I’m not sure how opening an investigation into potential dog rapes based on unsubstantiated claims in an NYT op-Ed would help. I don’t think an unsubstantiated claim is enough to open an investigation. Who did this? Where was the dog incident? What did the soldier look like? Who else was there to be a witness? We don’t have enough evidence to open any kind of investigation.
I used to think so, but every article seems to be just bashing Israel for something.
It's important that Jewish people express support for Epstein's victims and call for the indictments and punishment of his associates -- and voice opposition to Netanyahu's war crimes -- to show that those views have nothing to do with anti-Semitism and everything to do with calling attention to and stopping sexual abuse and genocide.

I'm not targeting the Jewish Community for blame that I wouldn't target any other community
with who have ignored, covered up sexual abuse in their midst, or protected predators!! In fact

Church, Catholic Charities in particular, in a severe case of sexual abuse, where I myself am

How is this at all surprising? Have you been totally ignoring all the reports of torture in Israel's detention facilities? The riot in response to the claims of rape that this article is now brining up again? Israeli society clearly doesn't want accountability, they cheer in the Knesset for the rape of prisoners.
