Allegations of sexual violence should always be taken seriously, however this interview (which I watched live) states explicitly that the Israeli rape dogs allegation is to be believed. Any rational person knows that to be nonsense that interferes with legitimate claims of abuse in the Israeli prison system (which we all know exist). The other unsettling part of this exercise on J Street's part is that they have not issued similar statements and have not set up similar interviews to discuss the Silenced No More report, which came out 24 hours after the Kristof article discussed (and taken at its word) in-depth here. For a "pro-Israel, pro-peace" organization, that seems like a terrible oversight.
Thanking Jeremy and Sari Bashi for this serious candid discussion. It stands in contrast to the recent discussion of the Hartman Institute, which was all about "I know my people, they wouldn't do this". Not once addressing the possibility that the allegations were true and should be investigated.

I admire you and your guests ability to look at it square in the eye. I think it only is possible when we have mercy, love and respect for ourselves and our own fallibilities. I have been meaning to write both the NYT and Kristof thanking them for their courage in having written and published his brilliant article and for standing by his allegations, with your second publication last Sunday, which I assume was in response to the barrage of criticism it received - but I will do so today.

I think we need to take Sari Bashi at her word and stop trying to say that Kristof's story is is biased or based on Hamas sources. She certainly is not one. She has said that the allegations about the use of dogs is not at all outrageous -- that dogs are used to intimidate people into submitting to all sorts of abuse. Those of us who care about Israel have to face facts.
We know this behavior is true, and I can't thank J Street enough for their bravery. The Middle East will never become a stable, democratic and a prosperous region without these discussions.
